2.6 NACO Training Review
This plan outlines how the Cataloging and Metadata department will review the PCC NACO training during the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 semesters.
As a NACO Program member our library “contribute[s] authority records for agents, places, works, and expressions to the LC/NACO Authority File” and commits “to support their staff through a process of training, review, and direct contributions of records to the LC/NACO Name Authority File”1. To align our department’s authority work with established NACO standards and practices, training is provided individually as well as department-wide at various times and venues (e.g. one-on-one training sessions, week-long on-site trainings and department meetings). The official NACO training modules are organized into PowerPoint presentations covering the following areas:
- Module 1: NACO Foundations (253 slides)
- Module 2: Describing Persons (127 slides)
- Module 3: Describing Families (101 slides)
- Module 4: Describing Corporate Bodies (118 slides)
- Module 5: Describing Places (182 slides)
- Module 6: Describing Works and Expressions (197 slides)
- Module 6a: Describing Series (308 slides)
- Module 7: Changes to Existing Authority Records (81 slides)
- Module 8: NACO Administration (30 slides)
For the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 semesters our department will participate in a 33 week-long review of modules 1-5 and 7-8.
All non-student employees are expected to participate unless otherwise directed by their supervisor. Weekly updates will be sent via email by the Metadata and Identities Librarian highlighting the NACO training content for that week. Participating employees will review each week’s assigned material following the NACO Module Review Schedule listed below. They will also attend seven 1-hr virtual Q&A sessions conducted by the Metadata and Identities Librarian and Authorities Specialist. These sessions are designed to answer questions, highlight key principles and practices, and clarify material covered during the review.
Modules 1-5 and 7-8 will be reviewed by all members of the department. Modules 6 and 6a will be reviewed with faculty in 2022 as part of the Conventional Collective Titles training project. Department-wide training on Modules 6 and 6a will occur in future training sessions.
